4-H Broadcasts its Commitment to Science on Fox Business Network

4-H's commitment to science, engineering and technology was the focus of a Fox Business News story on July 7. Fox Business Channel 's Charles Payne--who shared with the audience that he was a former 4-H'er--talked with National 4-H Council President and CEO Donald T. Floyd about how 4-H is helping the nation meet our need for a larger science, engineering, and technology workforce by providing youth with opportunities for out-of-school time hands-on learning science experiences.

4-H is committed to enrolling one million new young people in 4-H Science, Engineering and Technology Programs in the next five years.

"We're an organization that's been known for Ag Science for a long time. Today we're into GPS, GIS, bio-fuels, and alternative energies, because young people really need to be prepared for a global competitive work force, and the United States needs a lot more scientists than we are currently producing," said Floyd.

Idaho 4-H Horse of the Year

A Spanish-Arabian mare, Berica, was selected as the 2008 Idaho 4-H Horse of the Year this June. Berica's owner, sixth-grader Julianna Larish of Grangeville, Idaho, nominated Berica in a statewide 4-H essay contest about how 4-H horses have changed young people's lives. The essay contest, themed 'My horse has made my life and the life of others better because...' was co-sponsored by the Idaho 4-H program and the Peter Stone Model Horse Company.

Larish is one of several youth aged 10 to 16 years old that entered the contest. For the past three years, Larish and her horse have participated in the Rough Riders 4-H Club, the Triple Bar Drill Team, and the Grangeville Border Days Rodeo and parades, as well as Pole Bending and Barrel racing. The two also attend fundraising events such as the upcoming St. Jude's Benefit Weekend Ride in August. Larish nominated Berica for the contest because she felt Berica was the 'best horse in the world' and loves working with Berica to teach first-time riders how to handle and ride a horse. "I help riders from age four to 18 ride my horse. [Berica] is a great teacher," said Larish. "Her name means 'glorious, intelligent.'"

2008 1890 Land-Grant Conference

The 1890 Land Grant Conference, held every three years, took place in Memphis, TN on June 8-11 and focused on the theme "Addressing Universal Issues through Science and Engagement." With this in mind, scientists, faculty, Extension specialists, program leaders, educators, and students from across the United States discussed four issues of national priority: obesity and wellness, renewable energy, youth development, and food safety. The groups participated in theme-based, interactive, break-out sessions and forums to contribute their ideas on how to move research and programming forward in these areas. The conference also served as a place of dialogue to develop partnership commitments and to bolster funding opportunities for greater program impact.

The 1890 Land Grant Conference is hosted by the Association of Extension Administrators (AEA) and Association of Research Directors (ARD) in cooperation with 1890 land-grant universities. The conference followed the passage of the 2008 Farm Bill that allocates expanded access to research dollars for 1890 land-grant institutions, creates mandatory funding for bio-energy and bio-based products, boosts spending for conservation programs, assures funding for fruit and vegetable producers, and increases funding for bio-fuels research beyond corn.

Continued Success for Clover Country CD

Clover Country has sold more than 32,000 copies in just its first six weeks of release. As you may know, that makes it one of the most successful specialty music projects ever--and would place it on the Billboard 200 chart if it were sold through traditional channels! At a time when normal CD distribution methods are struggling, our 4-H nationwide network is showing the music industry its incredible strength. The 4-H CD and the stories of our dedicated alumni have already been featured on national TV networks like CMT, RFD-TV, and GAC and in more than 50 print, online and radio media outlets.

You can help promote Clover Country too by adding the below graphic to your e-mails.
