National 4-H Conference Delegates Are Ready for Action

National 4-H Conference delegates from across America are ready for action as they kicked off the 74th National 4-H Conference today at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center near Washington, DC.

The 2004 conference theme, 4-H Stepping into Action, reflects the conferences objective of helping delegates learn how to become more active citizens. Over the course of the six-day conference, 340 youth and adult delegates will attend a wide variety of youth and adult-led professional development workshops in which facilitators share demonstrated, proven steps that youth and adult partners can take toward becoming more active decision-makers and participants in their communities.

Delegates also will participate in round table discussions about how the 4-H Youth Development Program can best meet the needs of youth at the local, state, national and international levels. Their recommendations will be reported to Ann Veneman, Secretary of the United States Department of Agriculture, home of the 4-H Program. Finally, delegates will visit Senators and Members of Congress at their offices on Capitol Hill Tuesday to talk with them about 4-H in their states and communities.

The conference is not all hard work. Pre-conference activities included the pin swap (PHOTO)--a National 4-H Conference tradition--on Thursday night. An evening at the theater, movie night and a variety show are all part of the conference experience, which culminates with the Clover Ball, a formal dance.

Follow all of the conference activities via the National 4-H Conference E-zine or check out photos at the Gallery.

The 4-H Name & Emblem is protected by 18 USC 707.
