4-H Family on ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

Murfreesboro, Ark.-When Kim Collins heard the news that her cousin was killed in a car accident, she was devastated. However, with one teenage son still living at home, Kim and her husband Dennis immediately decided to bring her cousin's five children into their home to save them from separation.

After two years of fighting to have the children under one roof, the family was able to move forward. By joining community programs like 4-H, they grew stronger and more committed to each other.

Today, the Collins family continues to stay involved in the University of Arkansas's 4-H youth development program. Their children are active in the 4-H camping program, as well as the environmental stewardship, safety and ambassador projects. The son, Mitchell, 18, recently received recognition as a state finalist by the “Volvo for Life” awards for his work with the Arkansas 4-H Adult Volunteer Leaders Association Pop-A-Tab project.

The producer of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition program contacted the Murfreesboro school about Mitchell’s award and then learned about his family’s story and his newly adopted siblings. As a result, on February 19, 2007, ABC’s Ty Pennington pulled up to their home and announced they were the winners. The family was soon on their way to Walt Disney World while their new home was being built.

In just one week, the 2,000 person makeover crew, spearheaded by RealSteel Homes of Fayetteville, Ark., transformed the property. The results of their hard work, a new five bedroom, 4900-plus square foot house, will air on ABC this coming Sunday, April 29th at 8/7c.

Stayed tuned to the next issue of Clover Corner News for more photos and stories about the Collins family.
