Camp Zama 4-H Members Air Weekly News Show

Zama Teen Network’s (ZTN) news show made its historical debut on January 19, 2007. A production of the Camp Zama (Japan) 4-H Video Club, ZTN uses the show to highlight the events of the Camp Zama Teen program. Camp Zama Video 4-H club members are responsible to write, direct, produce and star in the news show. The Army Morale, Welfare and Recreation channel is home to this production. The production is aired hourly on Camp Zama channels and is also available on the internet at: http://zamayouthcenter.org/ZTN

In the past, Camp Zama 4-H’ers have developed and shared their video production skills by producing public service announcements, videos and commercials. This is the first time they actually have their own weekly news show.

Camp Zama Technology Coordinator and 4-H club leader, Ervin Lawrence comments about the students and the project, “It can be pretty stressful trying to shoot everything in two hours working with 10 teens and then have the finish product done in two days. But it is well worth it when you see the youth smile when they see their finished product on TV.”

The club meets weekly at the Camp Zama Teen Center. Although the club has focused on video production for several years now, the members change frequently as teens in the club have parents serving in the Army and are usually stationed at Camp Zama for only a short period of time. Because of the frequent moves, club leader Ervin Lawrence is constantly helping new teens learn video production skills.

The Camp Zama 4-H club is the result of the USDA/Army Youth Development Project which is a partnership of the U.S. Army, Community & Family Support (CFSC) and the USDA Cooperative State Research Education and Extension Service (CSREES). The two agencies share the goal of providing positive experiences youth need to live productive, healthy and self-sufficient lives.

By establishing Army 4-H Clubs, USDA and Army are partners in helping youth experience the power of working with adults and others to create positive change, imagine a positive future, and become the type of citizen who will make that future a reality. Army 4-H Clubs provide a "slice of home" for Army youth wherever they live.

The Hawaii Cooperative Extension Service oversees the Army 4-H clubs in Camp Zama and Kwajalein. For more information on Hawaii 4-H, contact Claire M. Nakatsuka at (808)-956-7196.
