4-H Afterschool Program Raises Water Awareness

While Lake Superior remains the cleanest of the Great Lakes, it is facing many threats including apathy among the people living along the lake’s shores. Douglas County, Wisc. residents are unaware of the effects that mercury, exotic species, and pollution have on the lake. Fifty-eight 4th and 5th grade students comprised six youth leadership teams, one from each of the county’s elementary schools, in three 4-H Afterschool programs to engage over 750 youth in educational, water friendly awareness strategies for Lake Superior.

The youth leaders partnered with 16 staff members to learn about Lake Superior and they collaborated to develop ideas to share that knowledge with others, creating school announcements and posters, Family Nights, and a Lake Superior Day Celebration to raise awareness of Lake Superior and the responsibility of the community to keep it clean..

This was one of 23 projects funded by the Coca-Cola Foundation under the REAL 4-H! (Refreshing the Environment with Action Leaders) community grants program. Learn more about 4-H grants at fourhcouncil.edu.

A poster session about this project was held at NAE4-HA in Atlanta, Ga. For more details, contact Joan Wimme of the Douglas County Extension office at joan.wimme@ces.uwex.edu.
