Guam 4-H Creates Advisory Council to Improve 4-H Programs
In its effort to create programs that truly reflect the needs of its island youth, the University of Guam Cooperative Extension Service, Family, 4-H, Food & Nutrition (F4-HFN) has established its first Guam 4-H Advisory Council to obtain much needed community based input for the development of Guam 4-H Youth programming. The Council’s first members were inducted last November at the Agriculture and Life Sciences Building at the University of Guam.
Since its inception, the mission of the Guam 4-H and Youth Development Program has been to create an island-wide community environment in which culturally diverse youth and adults learn, grow and work together as catalysts for positive change. The improvement of this mission’s achievement was the force behind the creation of the Advisory Council.
Those selected to serve on the Guam 4-H Advisory Council represent individuals from the community with varying interests and concerns in the development of the island’s youth. They are tasked with advancing and supporting the 4-H and Youth Development Program through such endeavors as: taking an active role in all aspects of the development of 4-H educational programs; offering "grassroots" input on issues affecting island youth; fostering an environment that promotes 4-H volunteerism; and supporting the 4-H program in its efforts to acquire extramural funds and material support to enhance 4-H educational programs.
The council will function under the guidance of the 4-H Program Leader. The active partnership between the Council and Leader is a key factor in the success of Guam 4-H’s future. While the 4-H Program Leader holds the ultimate responsibility for all aspects of the 4-H program, a collaborative relationship with the Council is crucial to the well-being of the program. The valuable knowledge, skills and talents shared by the Council members will help to ensure that the 4-H program will meet the needs of the youth to the fullest extent possible, providing them with fun-filled learning experiences and development of positive life skills which will last a lifetime.
