4-H Broadcasts its Commitment to Science on Fox Business Network
4-H's commitment to science, engineering and technology was the focus of a Fox Business News story on July 7. Fox Business Channel 's Charles Payne--who shared with the audience that he was a former 4-H'er--talked with National 4-H Council President and CEO Donald T. Floyd about how 4-H is helping the nation meet our need for a larger science, engineering, and technology workforce by providing youth with opportunities for out-of-school time hands-on learning science experiences.
4-H is committed to enrolling one million new young people in 4-H Science, Engineering and Technology Programs in the next five years.
"We're an organization that's been known for Ag Science for a long time. Today we're into GPS, GIS, bio-fuels, and alternative energies, because young people really need to be prepared for a global competitive work force, and the United States needs a lot more scientists than we are currently producing," said Floyd.
Savoad Jacobs, a 4-H'er in New York City, joined the interview to describe his 4-H experience that sparked his interest in science. He started in the 4-H youth summer program at Cornell University Cooperative Extension in 2006 to learn how to grow plants hydroponically--in water and without soil--and discovered that a lot can be done with technology to grow plants. "Ever since, it's been a blast...I'm a real science head," said Jacobs.
