'Surviving' 4-H Camp

By Barb Krebs
The Weekly Record - York, PA

The kids who attended the York County 4-H Camp this summer were in for something a little different.

Dubbed "Survivor Camp," the week-long event held at the 4-H center in West Manchester Township involved Penn State Cooperative Extension of York County employees and a group of volunteers who taught the 51 campers about everything from pool safety and forensics to poisonous plants, pesticides and weather.

"We have never had so many groups, so many people, collaborating with us, who brought their experience and knowledge from so many areas. I think it has been exciting for the kids and for the counselors," Urban 4-H Educator Rijelle Kraft said.

Death by dirt, a workshop taught by Dan Flohr, of Kinsley Construction, emphasized the danger of playing around a construction site.

"A construction site is not a playground," Flohr said.

The message was brought home to kids who eagerly grabbed shovels and started digging to free several teddy bears buried in a trench.

"If you play around piles of dirt and in holes at a construction site, the dirt can shift, the sides cave in and bury you," said 10-year-old Kendra Hebenstreit of Dillsburg.
