Nominate Your 4-H Afterschool Program for Afterschool Alliance's Afterschool Storybook

Help the Afterschool Alliance create America's Afterschool Storybook! 4-H Afterschool Programs are invited to send in their nominations for the Afterschool Storybook, a project commemorating the 10th anniversary of the federal 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC).

America's Afterschool Storybook in a chance for individual 4-H Afterschool programs to share the positive impact they have had on youth in their communities. It will feature compelling stories of people from every state whose lives have been improved through after-school programs over the last decade.

To see sample stories, nominate an individual or submit a story, go to afterschoolalliance.org. The deadline for submitting stories is August 16 as the Afterschool Alliance will be choosing stories for inclusion in the Afterschool Storybook in September.

The Afterschool Alliance is looking for diversity of every kind in the Afterschool Storybook stories, so people from big cities and small towns, of every race, age and discipline, and with stories of all kinds are welcome. Examples of nominations might be:

  • A graduate student who became inspired to study engineering or international affairs or medicine because of her/his experience in after-school

  • A student who was in trouble (using illegal substances, etc.) until an after-school program turned her/him around

  • A student in an after-school program now who is doing an exciting and unusual service learning or cultural awareness project as part of the program

  • An educator who was burned out, but later reinvigorated by her/his experience at an after-school program

  • A business leader who has made a commitment to mentor students and finds it incredibly rewarding

  • A senior citizen who volunteers at an after-school program and has made a real difference in students' lives

  • A health professional who reached families with obesity/diabetes problems, or other health issues, through intervention from after-school program leaders

Afterschool Alliance officials said they will not be able to do significant vetting, or check for criminal records, so it is counting on nominators to help find people for nomination who are above reproach.
