Raising the Roof for Charity in Kiowa County

When disaster strikes a community, 4-H'ers are there to help.

This September 4-7, members, clubs, and families of 4-H are coming together for a community in Greensburg, Kansas, to help raise a 14,000 square-foot barn in just four days. In May 2007, a catastrophic tornado struck Greensburg and wiped out nearly 95 percent of the town, including the Kiowa County 4-H Livestock Pavilion. The barn raising event will bring members of the Greensburg community as well as volunteers from around the country together to rebuild the important 4-H landmark.

This event has been selected by the New York Says Thank You Foundation as an annual re-building project to help communities after a loss. 4-H clubs and members can join this vital project by donating funds, time, and supplies to the over 200 volunteers working on the event.

Support 4-H and send your contributions to the Kiowa County 4-H Show Barn, in care of the Kansas 4-H Foundation, 116 Umberger Hall, Manhattan, KS 66506. To get involved with the hands-on aspect of the barn raising event, contact the Kiowa County K-State Research and Extension Office at 620-723-2156 or Kendal Lothman, deputy director for emergency management and long-term recovery in Kiowa County at 620-723-4154.
